Updating Your Computer's Firmware

Most computers have specific updates for that brand of computer (ex. Lenovo, Dell, Asus, etc.). Below are instructions for common brands of computers and how to do brand specific updates. Lenovos are the main ones that we will talk about, but any other computer can follow similar steps with their own company specific update software.

Lenovo

Lenovo updates are run through an app called Lenovo Vantage. If it is not installed on your computer, you can install it for free from the Microsoft Store. Once you install the app and open it, there is a Check for Updates option in a purplish box. Click this option and it will take about 5 minutes to check for updates. When it is done, all of the critical and optional updates will appear. Choose them and then choose to update.

If there are any firmware or BIOS updates, these are extremely important and will require a reboot. Make sure you are plugged into a power source and that all of your work is saved before you start these updates because they may automatically restart your computer.

Apple

MacOS Updates cover any and all firmware updates that you would need, so there is no need to worry about updating your firmware if you own a Mac.
